Chapter Five

“And you’re going to lay the track all by yourself, are you?” Diktor Vincet, a grizzled old tough demanded of the lad in front of him. They had boarded the work train a half an hour ago and Diktor had determined that this Matthew Wayfarer was responsible for their being woken in the middle of the night and rustled out ‘on the king’s orders.’

“I am,” ‘Matthew’ replied stoutly. He lay his head back down on the seat he’d been resting against. “If you’ll let me sleep.”

“Sleep!” Diktor snorted. He moved forward, eyes squinting. “And if I don’t?”

‘Matthew’ muttered something and suddenly Diktor felt a chill wind run down his spine and out the front of his trousers.

“What did you do, what did you do?” Diktor squealed, his eyes bulging, hands patting himself in fear.

“I showed you what would happen if you wouldn’t let me sleep,” ‘Matthew’ replied. He moved his head against the seat and closed his eyes.

Diktor scowled, saw the smirks on the others and moved forward quietly, hands outstretched — he’d show the bugger.

Only it didn’t work out that way.

“Let me go, let me go!” Diktor squealed as invisible icicles raced all over his body. He dropped to the ground, his arms over his head as though afraid of unseen blows. “I won’t do it again, I swear!”

One piercing frost settled on his earlobe and he screamed in again. “My ear, my ear!”

“I think that’s enough,” ‘Matthew’ said quietly, waving a hand languidly toward the trembling man.

Diktor lay on the ground for a long while before he dared to move his head from the protection of his arms. Slowly, fearfully, he rose to his feet and stepped quietly away, turning only when Matthew Wayfarer called, “Let me know when we’re a half an hour from the station.”

“Yes, sir,” Diktor replied in a small voice. He turned to the other rail crew. “Someone get him a blanket.”

The others stared at him until he glowered and one of the smaller men nodded.

‘Matthew Wayfarer’ slept untroubled for the next five hours.

Walpish insisted that they enter South Sea Pass from the west which meant that they had to circle around the hill and come down the far side and then walk — out of sight — around the walls that guarded the southern part of the town until they at least came to the western plains and the open gates.

They were both tired and hungry by the time they entered the gates — hidden amongst the crowds of people entering the same way. Walpish quickly led them off the main thoroughfare and down a side street.

“Where are we going?” Skara demanded.

“A place I know,” Walpish replied secretively. Skara glared at him but he offered nothing further until they pulled up in front of a dimly lit three-story building that might — only with a great deal of charity — be called a tavern.

“What is this place?”

“It’s a house of comfort,” Walpish replied, pushing open the heavy oak door. Inside, heads turned toward him and sour faces dismissed them, all except the innkeep.
